Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) Programs by State
The Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program is available to parent(s) with children who cannot provide for the family's basic needs, regardless of whether you qualify for low income housing. TANF is a federally funded grant program and was created from the Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) under President Clinton in 1996. The Act allows states to create and administer their own assistance programs to provide temporary financial assistance while aiming to get people off of that assistance, primarily through employment.
TANF is administered by the Office of Family Assistance, which is part of the Administration for Children and Families. States have been accorded their own rules and budget for awarding assistance, so check with your local or county human services office.
